Reference Hydrologic Optics Nomenclature

This resource is developed by the GEO AquaWatch Nomenclature Focus Group, with funding by GEO AquaWatch and support from IOCCG.

Project:

The Reference Hydrologic Optics Nomenclature (RHON) is an online resource providing a version-based, citable, free and accessible authoritative terminology reference with the goal of facilitating communication between researchers with different specializations and experience within the field, researchers from other fields and stakeholders (institutions, agencies, etc).

It will contain descriptions, definitions, examples and discussions on concepts in hydrologic optics and aquatic remote sensing, as well as concepts from related fields from which we heavily borrow from (e.g. physics, statistics) or interact with (e.g. biology, chemistry). Its main objectives are:

  • Harmonize nomenclature and symbols.
  • Provide context for interpretation and use of concepts.
  • Consolidate relevant concepts in a single accessible document.

The production stage is expected to last for the period of January 2023 to June 2024. This will be followed by a community consultation period of 6 months, with public release in January 2025.

Access:

During the production stage, log in is required to read and edit the contents.

If you would like to join the effort, please send a message to the GEO AquaWatch Nomenclature Focus Group general coordinators: Alexandre Castagna and Daniela Gurlin.
